Self-Similarity in Turbulence

چکیده

Recent experimental discovery of extended self-similarity (ESS) was one of the most interesting developments, enabling precise determination of the scaling exponents of fully developed turbulence. Here we show that the ESS is consistent with the Navier-Stokes equations, provided the pressure -gradient contributions are expressed in terms of velocity differences in the mean field approximation ( Yakhot, Phys.Rev. E63, 026307, (2001)). A sufficient condition for extended self-similarity in a general dynamical system is derived.

Extended Self Similarity in Numerical Simulations of 3d Anisotropic Turbulence

Using a code based on the Lattice Boltzmann Equation, we have performed numerical simulations of a turbulent shear flow. We investigate the scaling behaviour of the structure functions in presence of anisotropic homogeneous turbulence, and we show that although Extended Self Similarity does not hold when strong shear effects are present, a more generalized scaling law can still be defined. PACS...

Free Decay of Turbulence and Breakdown of Self-Similarity

It has been generally assumed, since the work of von Karman and Howarth in 1938, that free decay of fully-developed turbulence is self-similar. We present here a simple phenomenological model of the decay of 3D incompressible turbulence, which predicts breakdown of self-similarity for low-wavenumber spectral exponents n in the range nc < n < 4, where nc is some threshold wavenumber. Calculation...

Multiscaling in Models of Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

From a numerical study of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations we show, for the first time in three dimensions sd 3d, that velocity and magnetic-field structure functions exhibit multiscaling, extended self-similarity (ESS), and generalized extended self-similarity (GESS). We propose a new shell model for homogeneous and isotropic MHD turbulence, which preserves all the invariants of ideal...

Long-range dependence and second-order intermittency of two dimensional turbulence

This paper proposes a class of models to represent, in the same framework, the self-similarity/long-range dependence and secondorder intermittency of 2-D turbulence. A method is given to estimate and separate these two effects. Application to a vorticity field indicates that the resulting energy spectrum follows the power laws, in the low-frequency as well as the high-frequency range, commonly ...
